M16 and IC4703
|
This image actually contains two objects.
M16 is an open star cluster first recorded in 1745 by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux. Charles Messier noted that the stars appeared to be embedded in a nebula (later cataloged as IC4703, AKA The Eagle or Star Queen nebula).
The star cluster is about 7 arc seconds square, the nebula is recorded as being about 35 arc seconds in diameter but extended nebulosity can be seen as a red glow extending throughout the image, especially towards the bottom left. This image covers about 40arc sec by 60 arc sec
Some of the bright stars show cosmetic color errors and flat tops due to overly aggressive blooming spike removal that should be fixed. I really need to change the way I expose subimages to avoid creating the blooming spikes in the first place
