NGC7295 (Helix Nebula)
|
The Helix Nebula is one of the closest planetary nebula at approximately 400 light years from Earth.
The nebula is formed from material ejected by the central star, which is seen to have a teal color due to material in front of the star from our viewpoint. The other stars are generally white, suggesting they are between us and the nebula.
The low surface brightness (mag 13.6) makes this a challenging object to image. It deserves several hours of exposure to build up a smooth background.

One treat is the small galaxy shining through the nebula (above the bright star on the right hand edge of the nebula). This is much easier to see in the full-size version.
