M20 (Trifid Nebula)
|
M20 (Trifid Nebula) is a pair of nebulas - a emission nebula (hydrogen atoms in the nebula are excited by the central stars, emitting light), and a reflection nebula (dust reflecting light from it's central star) in close proximity.
One day SBIG will finally have stock of the CFW8A filter wheel for this camera and I can start doing this imaging in color!
In this luminance-only image the emission nebula is most easily seen. The reflection nebula is somewhat dimmer and to the right of the emission nebula in this image. The pair of nebula is much clearer in color images due to the signficiant color differences between the two nebula (the emission nebula is red, the reflection nebula blue).
Click on this reduced image to get the full-resolution image. The very stable conditions at Willow Spring allowed a lot of detail to be captured that can only be seen in the full resolution image.
