M27 in H Alpha Light
|
M27 (also known as the Dumbbell Nebula) is a planetary nebula in the constellation of Vulecula.
M27 was the first planetary nebula every discovered. Charles Messier discovered it in 1764, recording 27th object in the catalog that bears his name.
This image was taken during the full moon under skies of average seeing. Using a H-alpha filter allowed the moonlight to be effectively removed while still passing the deep red H-Alpha light is emitted by the excited hydrogen gas in the nebula.
Imaging this nebula in H Alpha also allows the relatively dim halo of hydrogen gas around the bright part of the nebula. This is normally too dim to be seen in natural light images but shows up strongly in H Alpha.
